Price movements are amplified according to the contract size, so even with a small entry amount, if the direction is wrong, the loss ratio can still be significantly higher than your initial outlay.
"Settled by lot" means you only need to deposit a certain percentage as margin (required funds) to participate in a gold contract with a much larger notional value. For example, trading 1 lot (100 ounces) of gold may have a notional value exceeding USD 400,000, yet the required margin is far lower than that amount. This mechanism is leverage — it can amplify profits as well as losses.
